FAQ
Will you still mow my lawn if it's raining?
As a professional lawn care service our clients expect us to keep their grass mowed on schedule. This requires us to make good judgement calls on when to delay a mow. During months of the year when your lawn is actively growing it is better for us to come and mow the lawn wet than it is to skip the lawn and run the risk of it going multiple weeks without a cut. There are times when ruts may be created in your lawn due to being wet when mowed. These ruts are almost always temporary and self fix as the lawn dries out.
If you ever feel like your lawn is too wet to be mowed on your scheduled day please contact us right away and we will be happy to pause your service. We will do our best to make the best decisions for our clients but because of this subjectivity of this type of situation it can be hard to get it right for every client’s preferences.
Will you mulch or bag my grass?
We highly recommend mulching grass and will do so unless otherwise requested. This is because mulching grass recycles the clippings back into the grass and helps provide nutrients to the soil. By recycling this grass you are literally adding fertilizer back into the soil. This organic matter also gives microbial life in the soil more to feast on. As the microbial populations grow, nutrient availability in the soil is also increased for the plant. It’s a vicious cycle, in a good way!
But what about thatch?
Some people are concerned about a thatch layer built up on their soil from mulching grass. This is a much rarer problem than popularly believed. Even a half inch layer of thatch is not a problem. It is actually good for your soil as it keeps in necessary moisture.
Please let us know if you would like your lawn clippings collected and removed. Bagging grass may ensue additional costs to you as it requires more time for our crews and disposal costs for the company.
What height will you mow my lawn?
We determine what height to cut your lawn by a number of factors but most commonly it is based on the time of year. When we begin mowing your lawn in the spring we will mow it lower. As the temperature warms up your grass usually needs to be cut higher in order to combat the heat. During the hot summer months, we mow your lawn very high (typically 3 inches or higher) allowing it to be as thick and green as possible. As the weather transitions to cooler fall months, we will begin to cut the lawn a little shorter. Recommended grass length also is determined by species of grass. Here is Colorado most lawns are comprised of fescue, blue grass or a combination of the two. Fescue needs to be mowed higher at 3 1/2 – 4 inches.
Mowing at higher lengths helps control weeds and helps roots grow deeper into the soil. Ideally, you should never mow more that 33% of the grass blade at one time. That sometimes is more idealistic than practical but we try to mow according to your particular lawn!
What if there is damage to my property?
Please contact our office right away. Any time you see potential damage that might have been caused by our mowing crews please let us know. Please do not contact an outside vendor for the repair before contacting us.
How do I pay you? How often do you bill?
We accept cash, checks, credit cards or Venmo. Our Venmo handle is @sams-mowing (last 4 digits are 2880). We send out invoices at the beginning of each month for the previous month’s services. Each service will be listed and dated on your invoice. You may send payment to the address listed on the invoice, which is 385 Antora Court, Windsor CO 80550 or there is a drop box at this address and payment may be placed in there. If you have a question or concern about your invoice, please call the office. We do our best to track services accurately, but we are human and sometimes a mistake is made. Call us and we will work with you to make it right!
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes! As of the 2024 season, we do accept credit cards.
How do you mow my lawn so fast?
We use high-end commerical grade lawn mowers on larger lawns. These mowers are the best you can buy and cost 2-3 times what an average mower costs. These are self-propelled and are made to move at a much faster pace than a standard walk-behind mower. The key is to ensure blades are nice and sharp. We replace our blades often to ensure crisp cuts for your lawn.
Does someone need to be home during my lawn service?
No one needs to be at your home during your service. All we need is access to all areas of your property that will be serviced. If arranged prior to service, we can pick up checks/cash under mats or taped to doors but we would prefer to not pick up payment at your property as it slows down our crews.
How do you determine my price?
We strive to keep our prices competitive and reasonable for our customers! Our prices are based on the size of your lawn. We use software that is based on google maps and allows us to measure the square footage of your lawn. The lower the square footage, the lower the price.
Do you offer bi-weekly (or less often) mowing?
We do offer bi-weekly or one-time mows. We charge the same amount for these services. However, you should be aware that we highly recommend weekly mowing to keep your lawn in the best condition. If you are not a regular, weekly client long-grass fees may apply. We charge 50% of the total mowing cost as a long-grass fee for lawns that we deem necessary to mow more than once during a service visit. We want your lawn to look beautiful so our crews will use their discretion as to whether or not your grass will need mowed multiple times. We are open to mowing for those clients who are on vacation for a shorter period of time as well.
What about my pets?
We appreciate you letting us know if you have any pets that are kept outside so that the crews are aware of them. We make every effort to not let your pet through the gate, but can not guarantee your pet will not escape from your yard. Please leave your pet inside on your scheduled service days. Please pick up all pet waste, toys, bones, etc the day before we mow. If hit by a mower, objects like these are hazardous to our workers and others. Serious damage can occur to your property, our equipment, or our crews. Pet waste left in your yard may delay your service and long grass fees may apply.
I like to keep my gate locked. How can I let you in?
We understand your desire for security. We would appreciate if you could leave your gate unlocked on the day of your service or may supply us with a key/combination for your gates. The keys will be kept in the office except on the day of your service when it will be given to the crew for your lawn. If your property is not accessible to our crew on the day of your service, your service could be delayed and long grass fees may apply.
Do you provide landscaping services?
At this time, Sam’s Lawn Care does not provide planting, mulching, reseeding, dethatching, or power-raking services.
What kind of fertilizers do you use? Are they pet-safe?
We use a variety of fertilizers on your lawn depending on the time of year and what you are looking for. Most commonly we apply a nitrogen-rich product called Milorganite. It is an organic, slow-releasing compound that reduces the amount of water needed and nourishes grass while feeding soil microbes. It is pet-safe. We also sometimes use a weed and feed product (upon request) to help combat spring weed growth. In the autumn, we use a winterizing fertilizer that is rich in phosphorus and nitrogen to give your grass a head-start for the next year. These fertilizers are deemed pet-safe after fully absorbed into the soil. It is recommended that you water them into the soil prior to allowing your pet on the grass.
What about aeration?
Core aeration is the process of removing plugs from the alwn, which create small holes. These holes allow air, water, fertilizer and soil amendments to get down to the root level. It relieves soil compaction, allowing the grass to grow deeper roots and make better use of water and fertilizer. Aeration is beneficial in the spring and the autumn. When aeration coincides with active growth, grasses recover quickly and fill in areas where the equipment exposes soil. Aerating is easiest on soil when it is moist from irrigation, snowmelt and rainfall. Overly dry soil can be touch to aerate and will not result in deep plugs (which is what you want!). You can expect plugs between 2-3 inches when the soil is moist.
Do you offer any discounts?
We are happy to offer our customers a discount for reviews and referrals! Leave us a review or comment on Google or have a neighbor or friend schedule a service and we’ll happily give you a credit on your next invoice! (Be sure to let us know!)
What do you use for snow removal?
Sam and his crew use single and two-stage snowblowers most of the time. However, depending on the amount of snow, Sam also has a small plow and blowers and shovels that they use to move the snow.
What areas are included in snow removal?
Your driveway, sidewalks and front porch areas are cleared when we do your snow removal. We do have some customers that request areas in the back, like decks or dog runs that we will clear for an additional fee.
